CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

A few corn and soybean fields are planted but many farmers are still waiting for warmer, drier weather to kick off the season.

There were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending April 21, 2024.  Statewide, the average temperature was 56.9 degrees, 2.4 degrees above normal.

Precipitation averaged 0.95 inches, equal to normal precipitation.  Topsoil moisture supply was rated 5% short, 79% adequate, and 16% surplus.  Subsoil moisture supply was rated 4% very short, 17% short, 65% adequate, and 14% surplus.

Corn planted reached 11%, compared to the 5-year average of 10%. Corn emerged reached 1%.

Soybeans planted reached 11%, compared to the 5-year average of 6%. Soybeans emerged reached 1%.

Winter wheat headed reached 11%, compared to the 5-year average of 5%.  Winter wheat condition was 1% very poor, 3% poor, 13% fair, 67% good, and 16% excellent.
