During a recent meeting of the Olney City Council, council members approved a Solar Farm ordinance.

There is an effort underway around the state where people with solar panels will be able to sell solar energy back to utility companies to meet the mandates of the federal government for renewable energies.

A yet to be identified company has stated that there are 3 individuals in the Olney area who have expressed an interest in installing the solar panels. Two of those are in Richland County; one is in the Olney city limits. Thus, the Council passed an ordinance that would allow a Special Zoning Permit, which would give a variance to the landowner, allowing them to place the panels on their property.

Solar Farms must still be in industrial or commercial areas.
